WinPatrol Explorer Integration Option

By popular demand, I’ve released an update to the latest version of WinPatrol. In the last new version I added the ability to request PLUS Info directly from Windows Explorer. Unfortunately, I neglected to make this an optional feature.  As always I like to make everyone happy so I found room for a new option.

New Explorer Integration Options

If you’d like this option you can download the newest WinPatrol 15.9.2008.5 at http://www.winpatrol.com/download.html.  Thanks again to everyone for their feedback and support.

I just upgraded to WinPatrol Version 15.9.2008.5 and have tried the Windows Explorer Integration. The "WinPatrol PLUS Info..." shows up when I right click on an executable file, but when I click on "WinPatrol PLUS Info...", all I get is the Run or Cancel dialog box. What am I doing wrong?

Bill,

Care to comment?

Have experienced the same issue as tunaman. It appears as reproducible.

Thanks in advance for prompt response.

tunaman,

Thanks for your post.

It would appear that the "Open File" dialogue is somewhat missleading.

If you click on the "Open" button, Scotty (WinPatrol, that is) will launch your default browser and guide you safely to the PLUS Info Database.

So all is sort of OK.

The Open dialog is not typical behavior and unfortunately may be the result of a registry tweak similar to one I wrote about previously.

What I would recommend is to click on the Options tab and you'll see a check box that says "Allow PLUS data collection". If you have this checked, uncheck it and let me know if that resolves the problem.

Thanks,
Bill

Bill,

I had previously made the "Copy to Folder" and "Move to Folder" hacks. I've tried what you suggested by checking and then clearing the "Allow PLUS data collection" box on the Options tab.

What I've found is that the "Allow PLUS data collection" option doesn't seem to make a difference - that is, I still get "Run/Cancel" dialog box.

HOWEVER, this time I tried clicking on the "Run" when it appeared . Instead of running the executable, it brought up the WinPatrol PLUS website information on that executable.

So, it seems to work, but I feel a little "blind" - clicking on the Run and hoping the executable won't actually run and that the PLUS info will be displayed.

Any suggestions?

Bill,

I think I now know what my problem is/was.

When I was testing out the "WinPatrol PLUS Info..." function, I had gone to a folder where I save various software downloads and patches. The files were executables, but were all "installation" files such as "wpsetup.exe". These files all resulted in the "Open File-Security Warning" dialog box. And when I selected "Run", they would then go to the WinPatrol website.

This morning, I decided to try some actual program executable files. When I selected the "WinPatrol PLUS Info..." option, all the program executables went directly to he WinPatrol website - as you intended.

So, for some reason, the installation executable files respond differently from actual program run executables.

As far as I'm concerned, this problem is solved for me. I hope if someone else is having difficulties as I did, this explanation will help them.

Thanks again for your excellent software. I've been a fan of WinPatrol for many, many years. Keep up the great work.

Sincerely,

Pete Anderson, A.K.A. "Tunaman"
